The capitalistic Americans. Almost everything is a commodity. They now have baby planners?!? A mom pays someone to plan everything for the baby from months before its born and even months after birth. They even get to chose the name of the baby. Crazy! Maternal responsibility can now be passed on to someone at a price. Amazing and not so amazing. Great you have a helper to do everything for you - to the point of even naming your baby...
In the future, you will hear people say, "that'll be $98.38 for 40 pounds of fresh oxygen." The battle for the environment continues, and it comes with a price. The environment is now a commodity - its priced! Is this capitalism at its finest? But how can someone give a monetary value for air? Who gets to say that your quality of air should be better than mine simply because you earn $1 M a year versus my hourly salary? Sad, but its inevitable. Hopefuly its not inevitable to the extent that I'm portraying here, but surely there will be a price on GREEN stuff. Yes, the environment is now up for grabs. Everything will eventually have a price tag on it, that's the only way the capitalistic market remedies itself. Well of course there's the idea of public policy, but maybe i can factor that in later on. When economist study market behavior they usually try to say, "Ceteris paribus," - all other things equal.
Even joy and childhood comes with a price. If I were asked what my favorite past time was during my childhood days, I would in a split second say paper airplanes. I think I spent a good chunk of my youth wasting paper (i wasnt that environmentally friendly back then) and trying to make them fly. Where am I heading? Well, I work for a company called MAD Science, and one of our philosophies is to instill the love (or curiosity or interest if you must) for science in children. I like the idea, but I sometimes feel that there's a dumbing down of science going on. Well first of all, they really don't emphasize on the concepts, but they just want the kids to be exposed to it. Sure, I don't totally disagree with that, I mean first graders don't need to memorize what folium and cilium are, but when they hear again it might ring a bell. Great!? Well, I think that the kids should not be deprived of concepts - if they grasp it great, and if they don't maybe next time. But they should not dumb down concepts and ideas because they're too young. Back to the paper airplanes... Our next class will be about airplanes. Yeap, a class on paper airplanes?!? crazy! if I were 6 years old and i attended a class in paper airplanes it would have been ecstatic, but wait a minute. These kids had to pay a couple hundred bucks to be in this class, while i had my paper airplane experience for free! Welcome to the world of capitalism where everything can be priced.
Btw, just as a reminder to the readers (and to myself). This is just a blog.. its not a research paper or anything, so don't expect much. but any opinions or topics of discussion is greatly appreciated.
I'm going to end this with a few thoughts on market economy. I certainly believe that there is no perfect form of market economy, just as there is no form of perfect government structure. Its all man made, and humans have always been found to have flaws. So what's the best way to go about it? The beauty of it is the ability of a system to change and to adapt. This is the idea behind ergonomics. Our surroundings should be able to adapt us. If we can change it, we can improve it. I guess there is no cap in improving.
I'm currently working two summer jobs, but it feels like I'm simply breaking even with all my bills and expenses. I've been currently trying to save enough money, so that during the rest of the semester I have enough money to live on. I dread the idea of asking my parents for money, because they've definitely given me their support, and I don't want to burden them with anymore financial concerns.
God has surely showered upon me his love and blessings - even though I feel that I deserve no more. God was so awesome to grant me a full ride to UC Berkeley, but I feel selfish in thinking that I'm honoring God simply because he gave me a scholarship. The thought of it just scares the wit out of me. I know I should honor God no matter what. But I honestly can't even imagine how I'm going to pay for college if it wasn't for this scholarship. Lord, I promise to make the most out of this scholarship you have given me.
